Rugby Football League Jobs

The Rugby Football League's executive chairman, Richard Lewis, has confirmed his support for the England coach, Tony Smith, following a report on the team's failure in last year's World Cup.

Smith's side won just one game – their opening match, against Papua New Guinea – and failed to reach the final after losing twice in consecutive weeks to New Zealand.

The RFL then conducted an investigation into the team's performance. As part of that process the governing body has unveiled a seven-point plan aimed at significant improvement in coming years.

Lewis said that Smith was not to blame for the team's displays and said that belief was shared by the England squad. Over half of the players were interviewed on a one-to-one basis as part of the RFL's investigation.

"The players to a man held their hands up on their own performances, " Lewis said. "I think that Tony was absolutely the right man for the job and still is. For me, supporting Tony is the right and proper thing to do.
